Surry: Raw

Regular price $195
7 left

We will notify you by email when Surry: Raw | Tonal becomes available.

The backstory: One of our jeansmiths started a batch of Surrys with blue stitching, and they're sort of gorgeous, so we finished the run (total pairs, 68).

They're made of raw, stretch denim. They start dark and a tiny bit stiff, then they'll soften, fade, and mold to your body over time.

(FYI, The on-body photos are of our gold-stitched Surrys).

Handcrafted in downtown Raleigh, NC, USA.

  •  Hand-signed inside on front pockets
  •  Signature red chainstitch hem, sewn on our Union Special 43200G
  •  Zipper fly
  •  92% Cotton / 6% Eme / 2% Elastane
  •  Brass buttons and rivets
  •  Navy stitch
  •  11 oz Cone Mills denim

Care: turn inside-out, wash cold separately. Hang or lay flat to dry.

How we do

In 2008, Chris Ellsberg, a master pattern maker with 60 years of experience, walked into our workshop and changed the game. She had heard we were making jeans with old-school methods and wanted to be a part of it. Back then, we didn’t have money to pay ourselves, much less Chris. But she signed on anyway because the work meant more to her than the money. Chris has taught us loads about the art of making jeans that flatter the lines of the body.

Start your raw denim snug but not too tight - they stretch out a bit over time. Then, wear them as much as possible before washing — this sets the creases and the wear pattern. When they start to smell, it’s time to give them a wash.

Indigo adheres to the outside of the yarn, but the center is still white. The longer you wear them without washing the first time, the higher the contrast will be on your fade.

When we started, we made every pair ourselves and signed each one. For us, it was just what you did when you made something and you were proud of it. Today, when one of our jeansmiths has reached a point where they’re as good or better than we are, we have a little ceremony and we give them a sharpie so they can start signing their work. Look for the signature on the inside front pocket.
